Parenting Styles

4 Types of Parenting Styles

Did you know that a person’s character and behavior are influenced by his childhood? That is why a good relationship between parents and children is so important. It is said that all problems come from childhood. Therefore, it is worth learning more about parenting and kids.

What is my parenting style?

Thus, each parent raises children differently. To do this, we build our own strategies. However, all parents’ strategies have similar or identical approaches. That is why they can be combined into 4 parenting styles. That’s exactly what Diane Baumrind, who studied parenting styles psychology, did in the 1960s.

These are such different parenting styles: Authoritarian parenting, Permissive parenting, and Authoritative parenting. However, psychologists Eleanor McCobby and John Martin added another to these styles – Uninvolved parenting. Let’s talk in more detail about each of them.

Authoritarian parenting

This style is about telling children what to do. In most cases, children do not have the right to disobey. Otherwise, they will be severely punished. The biggest disadvantage of this type of bringing up is giving arguments. All parents say is, “I said so. That’s why you have to do it!” This approach does not teach the child how to act in the future. After all, there is no explanation for a child. So they can’t analyze the situation.

Permissive parenting

This style of upbringing is used by undemanding parents. They do not tell children what to do or explain how it will be better to behave yourself in a particular situation. Parents do not require a level of behavior from their children. Such upbringing is very soft. That is why parents are not authority. Children do not feel motivated and supported. This has a bad effect on their future. They do not see the authority, do not know how to act in different situations. As a result, it affects the self-discipline of a child.

Uninvolved parenting

The given style is characterized by the excessive demands of parents. Mothers and fathers do not explain the very ethic of communicating and behaving yourself in a public. They are not authorized. They also do not react to the improper behavior of the children. Such parents are absent in the lives of their children. They provide children with needs such as food and clothing. However, they are not interested in psychological problems at all. Communication is almost absent. Therefore, children are left alone with their needs and decisions.

Authoritative parenting

These types of parenting styles also require children to do certain things. Parents also tell them how it will be better to live out a particular period of life, what to do, who to love. However, they always explain why it is necessary to do so. Therefore, children might learn to do useful things. The main thing is that they understand why they have to do it. Parents are also an authority on children. They demand but do not punish. On the contrary, they help to cope with difficult tasks.
